Synopsis

Our ancient ancestors may hold the key to beating modern diseases that threaten us all. As diseases evolve and mutate, they become resistant to current treatments. New vaccines must be created to fight each new version of a disease. But some scientists believe that the answer to this cat-and-mouse game is to alter their basic genetic structure. In this documentary, scientists look at the preserved DNA of three thousand-year-old mummies from Egypt. Inside many of these mummies are the early strains of the diseases we face today. With these most basic blueprints of modern plagues, scientists can see how diseases like TB and Malaria have changed over thousands of years, and how we might be able to stop them.
