Remake (Suicide Club) - April

Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, The Suicide Club, concerns a secret society that provides a final solution for people unable to cope with life. At regular meetings, they draw cards to see who will play mercy killer for the depressed or chronically ill person in question. The macabre premise has served as the basis for numerous film adaptations over the years starting with a film version in 1909 by director D.W. Griffith and starring Mack Sennett in a supporting role. Other screen adaptations include a 1914 version starring Frederick Culley and Montagu Love, and two German versions (one in 1919, one in 1932), both entitled Unheimliche Geschichten, which included the story in an anthology format with other suspense stories. Probably the most offbeat version is Trouble For Two (1936) starring Rosalind Russell and Robert Montgomery. The first part of the film is structured like a romantic comedy while the second part of the film evolves into a mystery thriller. Turner Classic Movies will be airing this version on Wednesday, April 25 at 3:30 am ET/12:30 am PT so you might want to take a look and compare it to a more recent version like the 1988 release (available on video) starring Mariel Hemingway. Or you could wait for the new version, directed by Rachel Samuels, which is due out this Spring. The Suicide Club (2000) stars Jonathan Pryce as Mr. Bourne, the sinister founder of the club, and David Morrisey and Catherine Siggins play prominent roles. The film has already premiered at various film festivals and was positively reviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle: "The film takes liberties with the Stevenson story. But only purists will carp at the adaptation by director Rachel Samuels (The Running Woman), who keeps a dark mood churning via, rich, shadowy photography." Filmed on location in Ireland, The Suicide Club is also interesting for the fact that it was produced by Roger Corman, who built his career on low-budget, exploitation films.
