Synopsis
Documentary investigation of the science behind the mysterious epidemic of the disease known as encephalitis lethargica, an inflammation of the brain that left many victims in a trance-like state for decades. The disease gained notoriety with a 1973 book by neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks which later became the 1990 film "Awakenings" starring Robin Williams as Dr. Sacks and Robert DeNiro as a patient who briefly "came back to life" after treatment with the drug L-dopa.
