Synopsis

After years of exploring for oil in the frozen reaches of northern Alaska, oil company geologists uncovered the massive Prudhoe Bay oilfield, one of the most remote corners of the United States. The oil companies proposed a solution to get the oil out of the region -- an 800-mile pipeline that would run from Alaska's North Slope south to the town of Valdez, the northernmost ice-free, deep-water port in the United States. The Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline crosses three mountain ranges, more than 100 rivers, and can withstand some of the strongest earthquakes known to man and nine-month long arctic winters. After three years and the help of over 70,000 people, the Alaska Oil Pipeline was completed.
