Synopsis

Many Americans have been deluded into thinking that the AIDS crisis has passed, that the plague of our time is a manageable disease with a cure just around the corner. In reality, almost one million Americans are now infected with HIV, current drug therapies are failing for many, and evidence is mounting that the HIV virus is making a comeback. Documentary travels from San Francisco's gay neighborhoods, to Chicago's public hospitals, to Florida's retirement communities, to examine the overwhelming sense of complacency about AIDS. The program also shows why the drugs that were hailed as a potential cure in 1996 have fallen short of expectations. The documentary also follows the progress of a drug discovery that began in the rainforest of Malaysia. The story of the drug Calanolide A reflects the hope and disappointment that has plagued researchers in their search for a genuine and enduring care for AIDS.
