Synopsis

Documentary that looks at the truth behind Emily Bronte's novel "Wuthering Heights." Based on the research of Englishwoman Mary Butterfield, the program examines a collection of documents called the Heaton Papers. The papers were found to contain the turbulent history of the Heaton Family, Yorkshire gentry who had lived for centuries at Ponden Hall, a dark, gaunt house perched on the edge of the moors near Haworth, the Bronte family home. The family had links with the Brontes -- connections that the Heatons had tried to conceal. Mary Butterfield tells of her discovery of the identity of the true-life Heathcliff, of the turbulent relationship between the Brontes and the Heatons, and how Emily became inspired to write one of the greatest romances in literary history.
