Synopsis

Documentary in which bridge designer David Goodyear highlights the trials and tribulations of bridge-building, while describing his work on a reinforced cement arch cantilevered over a 300-foot-deep gorge in the Oregon high plains. The program also depicts the perils confronting the engineers of Japan's Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. At 2.4 miles, the Akashi Kaikyo is not only the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world, it also rests on a major fault zone. After decades of research and testing, and surviving monsoons and the Kobe Earthquake, the Akashi opened to traffic in 1998.
