Synopsis

The fifth series featuring Victorian physician Eleanor Bramwell, the hero of London's downtrodden. As the country enjoys the Diamond Jubilee celebration of Queen Victoria's reign in 1897, Finn O'Neil shatters Eleanor by announcing that he has married an American. At Jubilee party at the Thrift is brought to a screeching halt by the discovery of a murdered ex-patient outside. In Episode 2, Eleanor renounces her old life and goes to the country to recover from her heartbreak. The clinic's small staff is struggling to it open. Usually calm and authoritative, Nurse Carr is being driven to distraction by her mentally ill mother. In Episode 3, Eleanor is at the country house of her old friend Isobel and her philandering husband, Charles. Neither Isobel's attentions, nor her husband's, nor a local bachelor's can console Eleanor. But a measles epidemic at the nearby school and the out-of-wedlock pregnancy of one of the servants is just what Eleanor needs to het her back in her element -- fighting for public health and enlightened attitudes toward women. In Episode 4, Dr. Robert Bramwell, Eleanor's father has borrowed to the hilt to finance a fashionable address for his medical practice. Moreover, he is about to fulfill his dream of marrying brewery heiress Alice Costigan. But now back home, Eleanor is disdainful of the new office and oddly uncertain about Alice. More openly ambivalent is Robert's patient Mrs. Talbot, a hypochondriac, who suddenly declares her passionate love to a startled Robert. An added complication is that Mrs. Talbot's husband is responsible for Robert's real-estate loan. Worst of all, Mrs. Talbot is desperate to have her man.
