Synopsis

Father and son: one a Communist, head of East Germany's official propaganda machine; the other charismatic and infamous, former leader of East Germany's Neo-Nazis. Parallel lives separated by a chasm of silence: they have not spoken to each other for 8 years. Hans Canje was a Hitler Youth and one of the few in his battalion to survive. A chance meeting with a concentration camp survivor turned his life upside down: he became a dedicated Communist. Imprisoned by West Germany, he escaped to East Berlin in 1963. His son, Ingo Hasselbach, jailed for shouting that the Berlin Wall must come down, met in prison old Nazis, war criminals who became his mentors. After his career as a Neo-Nazi leader, Hasselbach fled to West Berlin in 1993, renounced his past and became a media celebrity and best-selling author.
