Synopsis

The true story of Carl Upchurch, a hardened criminal from South Philadelphia who spent most of his adult life in prison. While behind bars, his studies of philosophy and literature turn him from his violent past into a crusader for non-violence. His studies were influenced in large part by the prison school teacher, Martha. Upon his release, Carl organized the first national gang summit in Kansas City in 1993, where the leaders of rival gangs from across the country sat together to discuss peace.
