The Everest climb that was shot for this film took place during the 1996 season. On May 10th, eight people died during a violent storm including expert mountain guides Scott Fisher and Rob Hall.
Expedition deputy leader Jamling Tenzing Norgay is the son of Tenzing Norgay who made the first ascent of Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953.
