Synopsis
During the 1961 baseball season, friends and Yankee teammates Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle compete against each other to break Babe Ruth's single-season record of 60 home runs. As the flamboyant superstar Mantle and the aloof family man Maris chased the ghost of the Babe, they found themselves caught in the glare of an unrelenting media spotlight that tested the limits of their patience and their friendship. During their summertime rivalry, Maris convinces Mantle to move in with him into a little apartment in Queens to help his hero Mantle stop drinking.

The title, "61*," refers to the asterisk that baseball commissioner Ford Frick attached to Maris' single-season home run record. By 1961, the American League had expanded its season from the 154 games played in Ruth's day, adopting a 162-game schedule. Frick, who had once been a ghostwriter for Ruth, ruled that there would have to be a "distinctive mark" to show that it had taken Maris 162 games to break the record that Ruth has set in 154 games. In 1991 the asterisk on Maris' achievement was lifted.
"61*" is writer Hank Steinberg's first produced screenplay.
Billy Crystal (who, along with his wife, is a part-owner of the National League's Arizona Diamondbacks) was a friend of Mickey Mantle for 20 years until Mantle's death in 1995. Crystal and sports commentator Bob Costas co-wrote the eulogy.
