Feature directorial debut for actress Joan Chen who graduated with a BA in film production from California State University, Northridge, in 1991.

This film was shot without official clearance from China's Film Bureau. Technically, all films shot on mainland soil require script clearance, a shooting permit, and censorship clearance prior to export. Subsequently, "Xiu Xiu" was banned in China due to its sexual and political content.

"Sent-Down" is the term applied to the 7.5 million young students sent to the countryside for manual labor during the Cultural Revolution.
