Shortly after the film wrapped, one of the film's stars Michael Alig (the self-appointed "founder" of the Club kid movement) became the focal point of a murder investigation for brutally killing his drug dealer and "friend" Angel Melendez. Alig hacked the body to pieces and buried the evidence in a cardboard box that he tossed into the East River--and incident that mirrored much of what transpires in "Shampoo Horns."
