Synopsis

The rich and religious patriarch Kalikinkar dreams that his adolescent daughter-in-law Doyamoyee is a reincarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali. Proclaiming his vision, he places the girl on an altar outside his home, where she is universally venerated. When a sick child is cured, her divinity is confirmed, and Doyamoyee begins to doubt her own humanity. Returning from his studies in Calcutta, her husband, Umaprasad, demands that the rituals cease and that Doyamoyee come away with him. Fearing divine retribution, his wife refuses. Unable to save her stricken nephew Khoka from death, she becomes insane. [In the original version, Doyamoyee dies by the river as Umaprasad returns.]
