In late 18th century Korea, during the Chosun Dynasty, Mongryong, the son of a governor, falls in love with Chunhyang, the daughter of a courtesan. Because of class differences their love is forbidden. He leaves reluctantly and promises that once he finishes his schooling, he will send for his beloved. But time passes and a new, vindictive Governor is appointed to the province where Chunhyang lives. Making himself her new suitor, the new Governor, pursues Chunhyang, relentlessly, seeking her hand in marriage. And when she refuses his advances, Chunhyang is imprisoned and sentenced to death.
