After Benjamin was brought to media artist Jem Cohen's attention by R.E.M. vocalist Michael Stipe in 1989, Cohen sporadically filmed him from 1990 onward. However, the bulk of the conversational footage of Bejamin was filmed in 1997. Before he succumbed to AIDS in early 1999, Dickerson (who fronted the bands Freedom Puff, Opal Foxx Quartet and Smoke) had the chance to open for the legendary Patti Smith who memorialized him in her song "Death Singing."
