The Four Feathers - THE FOUR FEATHERS

The Four Feathers has been filmed so often that reviews are arguing about what position to assign the version now in theatres. Number Five? Six? Well, it's actually Number Seven if you count a TV movie but in any case some critics are saying it's a more exciting and intelligent film than its predecessors. A.E.W. Mason's 1902 novel was an enormous best-seller at the time but several generations have responded to the basic story. When military Harry Faversham (how's that for a British name?) resigns right before his unit ships out to the Sudan he is sent four feathers by friends and his fiancee as an indication that he's a coward. To redeem himself, Harry travels incognito through the desert amidst a war to help his old chums.

To add a modern twist, the producers brought in Shekhar Kapur, an Indian director whose previous credits include Elizabeth (1998) and Bandit Queen (1994). Kapur is a former accountant who later went into what might be considered the family business since his uncles are noted Bollywood actor-directors Vijay Anand and Dev Anand. The lead role of the cowardly soldier went to hot actor Heath Ledger (A Knight's Tale, Monster Ball) after Jude Law passed so he could make A.I. Kate Hudson (Almost Famous) plays his fiancee and Wes Bentley (American Beauty) is his best friend. One additional character new to the 2002 version is a kind of mentor to Harry played by Amistad's Djimon Hounsou.

Cast and crew started work on The Four Feathers in several places throughout Morocco including a 600-year-old town and sand dunes higher than a football field. They had to film during the winter months so the temperatures would be bearable and worked from small "tent cities" that housed the hundreds of people involved. After about three months of work, they finished the film on locations in England. Throughout the production attention was given to details such as costuming and even historically correct marching techniques.
