Geoffrey Wright was originally attached to direct but left the project due to creative differences and was replaced by Walter Hill.

Veteran director Walter Hill reportedly left the project after the completion of principal photography due to creative differences. At Hill's request, the Directors' Guild of America replaced his name with the pseudonym Thomas Lee, which has replaced the much-used Allan Smithee.
