Synopsis

Oriko rebels against her sexually promiscuous mother, whose life ended in a traffic accident, by marrying Furuhata, a business executive. After five years, Oriko is so indifferent to her husband that she expresses no concern over his extra-marital affair. She meets Mitsuharu, a sculptor and former lover of her mother, and finds that her past hatred for him has given way to more friendly feelings. After a party that evening, Oriko witnesses her sister-in-law's rape in a deserted beach house by a laborer and finds herself fascinated by the man. Returning to the house the next day, she finds that the laborer lives there. She submits to his advances and later tells Mitsuharu about the incident. He suggests she divorce her husband and come to him. When Furuhata accuses her of adultery with the sculptor, she discloses her affair with the laborer. Shocked, Furuhata agrees to a divorce. That night Oriko and Mitsuharu make love for the first time. Although Oriko visits the beach house once more, the laborer has left. Meanwhile, Mitsuharu, crushed under one of his sculptures, is paralyzed below the waist and rendered permanently impotent. Oriko decides to care for him and assume the role of loving mother.
