Synopsis
Four-part documentary about the frightening reality of deadly plagues and viruses which have the potential to spread across the planet. The documentary profiles the work of "disease cowboys" -- hard-nosed scientists from the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) and other prestigious organizations who fight epidemics around the world. Even though important victories against disease have been won, a recent report indicates that cases of infectious disease are increasing dramatically. The narrative combines the scientists' life-and-death adventures and reflections on progress and new threats now faced in the United States. Archival films, newsreel and personal photo archives are also incorporated. Inspired by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Laurie Garrett's book of the same name.
