Synopsis

After embezzling a fortune in jewels and securities, T. F. Stockwell charters a plane and flees the country with his young daughter Doreen. While flying over the African jungle, their aircraft is buffeted by a powerful storm and forced to the ground. After the pilot and his passengers are stranded in the jungle, little Doreen wanders into the underbrush. When the pilot glimpses Stockwell's treasure, Stockwell shoots him and, realizing that Doreen is missing, conducts a frantic search and finds her standing beside a wounded gorilla. Years later, a stranger, Ray Gorman, arrives at a jungle village, piquing the interest of hunter Karl Hurst and his companion Marie. While Marie engages Gorman in conversation, Hurst searches his room and finds news clippings detailing Stockwell's disappearance and a fortune in stolen property. Later, Gorman becomes intrigued when he hears the natives discussing the legend of a great white witch, born of a bird from the sky. When Gorman intervenes in a dispute and saves the life of Tobo, one of the natives, Tobo offers to lead him to the white witch. Overhearing their conversation, Marie reports it to Hurst. Later that evening, Hurst breaks into Gorman's room to steal the map pinpointing the location of the white witch. After driving away the intruder, Gorman decides to leave the village with Tobo that night. The next morning, Hurst and Marie follow them into the bush. In the jungle, Doreen, now a grown woman, examines her cache of jewels while Sampson, her gorilla friend, watches protectively. Plunging deeper into the bush, Tobo and Gorman finally enter the land of the white witch and find the wreckage of Stockwell's aircraft. Gorman then tells Tobo the story of Stockwell's crime, and how Stockwell's partner, who was Gorman's father, was accused of being an accomplice and committed suicide. Gorman, who has vowed to clear his father's name and return the stolen property, believes that Stockwell's daughter must be the great white witch. While Gorman searches the aircraft, Tobo forages for food and is crushed to death by Sampson. Meanwhile, Hurst trips on the underbrush and sprains his ankle, leaving Marie to continue on alone. After discovering Tobo's body, Gorman follows the gorilla tracks to a cave and there finds a brooch lying in the dirt. As Gorman stoops to pick up the pin, Sampson attacks, but Doreen restrains him. Fascinated by Gorman's fair skin, Doreen tells him that Sampson has protected her ever since her father disappeared into the jungle. When Gorman declares that he wants to return the jewels to their rightful owners, Doreen naïvely responds that they belong to her. As they argue, Marie finds the cave and cunningly lies that she followed Gorman to warn him about Hurst. When Gorman tells Marie about Doreen's refusal to return the jewels, Marie suggests trapping Sampson and then taking them from Doreen. After Marie and Gorman capture the gorilla in a hastily built cage, Marie hurries to tell Hurst of her scheme. Meanwhile, Gorman searches the cave for the treasure. Just as he uncovers the strong box, Marie and Hurst arrive and a fight ensues. After knocking Gorman unconscious, Hurst and Marie grab the strongbox and trek into the jungle. Doreen follows them, and when they stop to examine their booty, she demands the return of her property. When Hurst makes amorous advances toward Doreen, a jealous Marie frees Sampson, who then tramples Marie to death. Upon regaining consciousness, Gorman overtakes Hurst in the jungle and another fight ensues. After knocking down Gorman, Hurst pulls his gun and is about to shoot him when Sampson plows through the underbrush, and Hurst turns and fires at the beast. After thrashing Hurst to death, Sampson collapses and dies, and Gorman consoles Doreen by promising to take her home.
