Synopsis

Dr. Leyden, a brilliant surgeon driven by drink to disgrace, retires to an Alpine village in Switzerland and there becomes enamored of Hilda, a servant at the inn where he lives. To win her love, he intercepts the letter written to her by Ruffo, a dashing ski jumper; and assuming she has been deserted by her lover, Hilda marries the doctor. When Ruffo returns, Leyden, remorseful and also intensely jealous, takes seriously Ruffo's suggestion that he brand his wife. He sinks lower when Ruffo takes Hilda away, but in the end he saves the life of his rival and is himself killed in a snow avalanche.
