Synopsis

The high priestess Rhea Silvia, daughter of the murdered king of Alba Longa, bears twin sons by the god Mars and places the babies, Romulus and Remus, into the river current to prevent them from also being slain. A she-wolf finds them, nurses them, and rears them from infancy. After they reach manhood, they learn of their royal heritage, return to their homeland, and kill the usurpers to their throne. After burning the city, they lead the people beyond the mountains and swamps to a plain where they hope to build a great city. Meanwhile, bitter rivalry has sprung up between Romulus and Remus over Julia, daughter of the king of the Sabines, who has deserted her people to be with Romulus. Remus challenges his brother to a duel in which Romulus mortally wounds him. Before he dies, Remus and Romulus forgive each other their wrongdoings. Romulus, with Julia at his side, sets out to found the mighty Roman Empire.
