Brief Synopsis

Marianne is a young French woman who wants to be an actress. She moves to Paris, where theatrical producer Henry Legrand takes her under his wing -- Henry was romantically involved with Marianne's mother years ago and wants to look after the girl. However, when Marianne falls in love with Lucien, Henry's attentions become more romantically-inclined, and Marianne is forced to choose between the two men.

Synopsis

Scorned by her pleasure-loving mother, Marianne is reared by peasants in Brittany. Ten years later, in Paris, she falls in love with Lucien, a soldier, and enters the realm of the theater with the help of Legrande, a theatrical producer and former suitor of Marianne's mother. Lucien, a deserter, is jailed when he steals a dress for Marianne. Although she promises to wait for Lucien, Marianne succumbs to Legrande and his wealth; but ultimately she relinquishes fame and recognition and nearly commits suicide for the love of Lucien. They marry when he is released from jail and settle down to a farm life.
