Memories of Oz

Probably the most beloved movie of all time, The Wizard of Oz (1939) has become part of our culture and our collective memory. Judy Garland stars in a near-mythic performance as Dorothy, the Kansas farm girl who travels "Over the Rainbow" to a Technicolored land of imagination, only to discover that "There's no place like home." Memories of Oz (2001), a 30-minute documentary, reflects upon the movie, its place in cinema history and how it has affected so many lives. Included are interviews with several of the "Munchkins" who appeared in the movie, Buddy Ebsen (the original "Tin Man"), cult-film director John Waters, Jane Lahr (daughter of "Cowardly Lion" Bert Lahr), choreographer Dona Massin (who created the "We're Off to See the Wizard" dance steps) and various Oz historians and collectors. Among the little-known facts featured in the documentary is information on a story angle, cut during the early revision process, that had Dorothy and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger) sharing an innocent romance; and such filming techniques as the use of a double in a sepia-toned dress who opens the door for the real Dorothy in a Technicolor dress, revealing the brightly hued Land of Oz.

Interviewees: Buddy Ebsen, Jerry Maren, Jane Lahr, Mickey Carroll, Willard Carroll.
