Synopsis

Soon after John Kendall's father loses his fortune, he dies, leaving John penniless. John then enlists in the army and becomes a sergeant. During a visit to his friend David Barclay, he meets and falls in love with Edith Ferris, the niece of Col. Dickinson. During a party, however, Lieutenant Burkett rebukes John for fraternizing with an officer's family. Edith's mother does not want her daughter involved with an enlisted man and thus conspires with Burkett to discredit him. One evening Edith arranges to visit John after taps to inform him of the plot against him. In order to protect Edith's reputation, John lies about the reason that he was away from his post when a prisoner escapes from the guardhouse. Edith secretly explains everything to her uncle, however, and eventually John is exonerated. Some time later, John brings honor to himself during an operation in Nicaragua while Burkett proves to be a coward. John then becomes a lieutenant and is able to pursue Edith openly. He also learns the circumstances of his father's financial ruin and is able to regain some of his fortune.
