Set in World War II Italy in 1944, local partisans in Vaiano are resisting the occupation of their town by the German army. Don Paolo is a young priest who knows he has been hiding in the church and that in his heart he is a coward who is afraid to fight the atrocities perpetrated by the Germans. Stirred by the faith in him of Adriana, a local young woman, Don Paolo embarks on a mission to help the partisans fight the Germans. His cowardice causes the mission to fail and Adriana is captured. Awaiting execution, the priest goes to hear her confession, where he admits his cowardice. In an attempt to redeem himself, Don Paolo then engineers Adriana's escape from her cell knowing that he cannot follow.
