Synopsis
Once a four million acre wetland wilderness, the "River of Grass" is now half its original size. For Millennia, water flowed across the southern half of Florida breathing life into this great swampland. Alligators, panthers, manatees, key deer and hundreds of species of birds thrived in this pristine wetland. After a century of man-made dykes, levees, and drainage canals, the massive wetland has been brought to its knees - leaving the Everglades striving for water and condemning its wildlife to the possibility of a long, slow extinction. Today, we will look at what is being done to help bring back the Everglades so it remains one of our National Treasures.
