Synopsis

Norton Burbeck's affection for adventuress Beatrice Gaden blinds him to the fact that Beatrice is in league with Norton's cousin Howard to deprive him of his inheritance. Under the terms of their uncle's will, the estate will revert to Howard if Norton does not marry within a certain period of time. Thinking that he is engaged to Beatrice, Norton believes he has fulfilled the terms of his legacy until Beatrice tearfully confesses that she is already married. The schemers are ultimately defeated, however, because Norton, on the advice of his lawyer, has protected his holdings by marrying Jerry McNairn, a young Irishwoman he had befriended when she was orphaned. As Jerry prepares to return to Ireland, Norton comes to the realization that he really loves her and declares his love for his wife by proxy.
