Synopsis

Bill Maywood, an undercover Wells Fargo detective, poses as The Pinto Kid in order to investigate a series of killings involving stagecoach drivers. Just as he becomes friendly with the Wilson family, in particular Beth Wilson and her younger brother Bart, Mr. Wilson takes a job as stage driver in an attempt to pay off the ranch debt he owes to banker Henry Jethrow. Wilson is murdered, and Bill is accused of the crime, but escapes before he is put on trial. Grandpa Wilson is eager to avenge the death of his son and collect the $2,000 reward on Bill's head, but when Jethrow demands that he pay his son's note or lose the ranch, Grandpa leaves with Bart to raise the money. Bill returns to the Wilson ranch and convinces Beth to turn him in for the reward. Beth pays off Jethrow's note, and Bill is arrested. Eventually, Bill deduces that Jethrow is responsible for the killings and sets a trap for his gang by planting a rumor that a $30,000 payroll is going to be shipped on the stage. Jethrow falls for the trap and, after a wild chase, drowns trying to escape from Bill. Bill reveals his true identity, and the Wilsons are secure once again.
