Synopsis

The casual relationship between art student Eddie Slocum and Pam Burns, a teacher trainee, begins innocently with meetings at the apartment Eddie shares with his eccentric friend Tarragoo. Gradually a deeper attachment develops, and when her widowed mother is away, the young couple spend the night together at Pam's home. Their carefree affair continues until Pam learns that she is pregnant. Eddie, who has no income, feels that marriage would jeopardize his chances for a fellowship; Pam therefore decides to get an abortion and forget Eddie, but she cannot go through with the operation. Her mother, in whom she has confided, helps her plan to go away. Meanwhile, Eddie, under the influence of Tarragoo, who has high principles beneath his zany exterior, and a kindly history professor, who gives him a chance to pass an important exam, is able to meet his problem and face it responsibly. After learning that Pam has left, Eddie goes after her, fully confident that they can work out a future together.
