Synopsis
The evolution of the comedy team of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy is shown in a compilation of silent short films of the 1920's. The early years in which they worked in films independently is illustrated by Hardy's appearance in Fattie's Fatal Fun (1915) and Laurel's in the Hal Roach comedy Kill or Cure (1923). They appeared in different scenes in Forty-Five Minutes From Hollywood (1926), were casually paired in such films as Sugar Daddies (1927), and co-starred in Putting Pants on Philip (1927). In From Soup to Nuts (1928) they appeared wearing bowler hats in the characterizations that were to become famous. Different aspects of the team's silent comedy are explored with clips from Wrong Again (1929), The Finishing Touch (1928), Liberty (1929), Double Whoopee (1929), Leave 'Em Laughing (1928), You're Darn Tootin' (1928), The Second Hundred Years (1927), and Habeas Corpus (1928). The work of two other Hal Roach comedians is given special attention: Charlie Chase is featured in Never the Dames Shall Meet (1927) and Snappy Sneezer (1929), and Max Davidson in Call of the Cuckoo (1927), Pass the Gravy (1928), and Dumb Daddies (1928). The film ends with the climactic pie-throwing sequence from Laurel and Hardy's The Battle of the Century (1927), after which the two comics do their exit from We Faw Down [according to cutting continuity, We Fall Down ] (1928).
