Synopsis

Rancher Brit Marshal and his pal Ike are on their way to visit their partner, miner Sam Trotter, when they hear gunshots. Unknown to Ike and Brit, Trotter, who is shepherding a shipment of gold bullion, is being attacked and killed by four robbers, who then steal his wagon. When Brit and Ike finally catch up to the wagon, Red, the leader of the bandits, claims that they were the ones who were ambushed but drove off their attackers. Believing that the four men work for Trotter, Brit insists on accompanying them to the mine. When the sheriff and his men gallop up behind the wagon, Brit, thinking that they are robbers, holds them at bay with gunfire, allowing Red and his gang to escape across the state line. Brit is wounded in the crossfire, and the sheriff, assuming that he and Ike are outlaws, arrests them for Trotter's murder. As Brit and Ike languish in jail, the real outlaws visit Red's friend, W. J. Grayson, a crooked banker. Grayson agrees to hide the bullion in his vault, and as a claim check, tears up a five of clubs playing card into five parts and presents each man with a piece. Back at the jailhouse, Brit and Ike trick the deputy and escape, trailing the bandits to Grayson's town. There, Brit visits the office of Dr. McClane and has his wound treated and meets the doctor's daughter Jean. Finding no trace of the outlaws in town, Brit and Ike begin to search the ranches at the outskirts of town. At the Ellis ranch, Brit listens intently as little Jimmy Ellis recounts his terrifying encounter with two strange men at the Townsend ranch. Ike and Brit gallop to the ranch, but arrive too late, as the outlaws have shot each other over a card game. Discovering a piece of the five of clubs on both bodies, Brit begins to think that they may provide a clue to the missing gold. Back in town, Dr. McClane notifies the sheriff about his wounded patient, and the sheriff, realizing that Brit is a fugitive, follows him to the Townsend ranch. At a nearby ranch, Ike and Brit recognize Wade, one of the robbers, and Wade gallops off with the two cowboys in pursuit. After throwing Wade off his horse, Brit discovers that he holds another piece of the five of clubs. At that moment, the sheriff, drawn by the sound of gunshots, appears. While trying to escape, Wade is shot by the sheriff, and in the confusion, Ike and Brit gallop off and ride into town to find the fourth man. Locating Red in the saloon, Brit and Ike pursue him to an empty ranch house. Just as Brit captures the bandit and finds another piece of the card, the ranch owner returns home, pulls a gun on Brit and Ike and sends Red for the sheriff. Red rides directly to Grayson, who shoots him when he demands his share of the gold. Meanwhile, Ike and Brit escape and hearing the gunshots, ride to the bank. At that moment, the sheriff arrives, and after Grayson explains that he shot Red for attempted robbery, he arrests Brit and Ike again. In their cell, Ike begins to play with a deck of cards that he pilfered from Grayson's office and discovers that the five of clubs is missing, making Brit realize that Grayson must be the fifth man. Tricking a deputy once again, Ike and Brit escape and ride to Grayson's bank just in time to see him drive off in his gold-laden wagon. Pursued by the sheriff and his posse, Ike and Brit follow the banker. Catching up to the wagon, they find the gold and the fifth piece of the card just as the sheriff arrives. With proof of Grayson's guilt, the sheriff arrests the banker, thus exonerating both Brit and Ike.
