Synopsis
Anthony Hopkins and Lesley-Anne Down, who earlier had played Quasimodo and Esmeralda in the TV-movie version of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" three years earlier, have the roles taken in the 1948 film adaptation of the Remarque novel by Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman as somewhat unlikely lovers in war-torn France. Donald Pleasence, as the lustful Nazi on chanteuse Down's tail, has the part taken earlier by Charles Laughton. This production of the story superceded an abortive one started in 1982 with Maximilian Schell and Suzanne Pleshette as the romantic twosome.
