Synopsis

While vacationing in America, Prince Adolph of Syravia meets Jo Sheldon, and after they meet again at a charity fete, they fall in love. Wealthy Mr. Bote, a friend of Jo's family whose ambition is to become a baron, gives Jo's stepmother money to pay her creditors, in return for a note to which she has forged Jo's name, which promises that Jo will marry the prince and have him bestow the title on Bote. After the Duchess Louise, worried by Jo's love for the prince, convinces him to marry Jo only by a morganatic marriage, she refuses. When Mr. Bote subsequently threatens to stop payment, Jo learns of her stepmother's plot and agrees to the prince's terms to save her father. Meanwhile, the prince returns home after a false message that the king is dying, but when he learns of the deception, the prince renounces the throne and leaves to become an American citizen. After one of the king's men follows and causes an accident that seriously injures Jo, she recovers and marries the prince.
