This moody, suspenseful film is so oblique that Harold Pinter, author of such classic plays as The Birthday Party and Homecoming, was originally slated to direct. When he couldn't, the film passed to Alan Bridges, who had two years earlier scored the Palme d'Or at Cannes for The Hireling (1973). Vanessa Redgrave stars as a lonely woman running a remote island hotel (actually Portland, off the coast of Dorset) with her teenaged daughter (Susan George). A mysterious American (Cliff Robertson) checks in and tries to renew his 20-year-old romance with Redgrave, only for George to set her cap for him, despite the fact that he may actually be her father. Redgrave and Robertson are at the top of their game in Out of Season, but George's sexy performance comes close to stealing the film. She had made a big splash as Dustin Hoffman's wife in Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs (1971) before coming to the U.S. to co-star with Peter Fonda in Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974) and play James Mason's evil daughter-in-law in Mandingo (1975). Although still active as an actress, she is now best known as a breeder of Arabian horses, a business she co-founded with her late husband, Simon MacCorkindale.
