Synopsis

A treaty between the United States government and the Cheyenne Indians makes it a criminal offense for white hunters to shoot buffalo. Col. Drummond and Capt. Red Taylor are entrusted with enforcing the treaty. Buffalo hunter Wade Carter asks Drummond for permission to hunt buffalo in the Texas panhandle, and when Drummond refuses, Carter decides to force the Indians to break the treaty by having his men shoot the two sons of Chief Red Smoke while dressed as army officers. One of the sons, Little Big Wolf, survives and brings his dead brother home. Blaming the army, the Cheyenne go on the warpath for revenge. By doing so, they break the treaty and Drummond decides to arrest Red Smoke despite Red's defense of the Indians' actions. Drummond's daughter Ruth writes that she will soon return to the fort from Dodge City. Red rides through an Indian attack to warn her of the danger, but she thinks that he is overcautious and arranges to travel with Carter's men. Carter goads Red until he starts a fight and then has him arrested so he cannot interfere with their plans. Meanwhile, Indians attack Carter's wagon train. Burley Barton, Carter's partner, attacks Ruth, who runs off and is captured by the Indians. Red Smoke plans to torture her in revenge for the murder of his son, but Red manages to prove that Carter is guilty of the murder and peace returns.
