Screenwriters Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner reportedly started from scratch and disregarded all previous incarnations of the project, primarily basing their new script on the first book in the series to focus on the relationship between gunslinger Roland Deschains and his underling Jake Chambers.
Ron Howard was previously attached to direct.
"The Dark Tower" is planned to be the first in a series of movies. A complementary television series is also being developed by co-financier Media Rights Capital.
