Amber Tamblyn had previously been mentioned for a role.
On April 19, 2014 a live read of the first draft was performed at the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. Performers included Samuel L. Jackson as Major Marquis Warren, Tim Roth as Oswaldo Mobray, Kurt Russell as John Ruth aka "The Hangman", James Parks as O.B. Jackson, Amber Tamblyn as Daisy Domergue, Michael Madsen as John Gage, Denis Menochet as Bob "from France", James Remar as Jody, Walton Goggins as Chris Mannix, Bruce Dern as Southern General Sanford Smithers, Dana Gourrier as Minnie, and Zoe Bell as Six Horse Judy.
Quentin Tarantino and the producers planned to shoot the project on 65mm film and undergo the widest 70mm film release in more than 20 years, with an expected 35 mm and digital release to follow.
Potential buyers looking to secure foreign rights to the then-unproduced film at the 2014 American Film Market in Santa Monica were only able to read the revised script, minus the ending, in The Weinstein Company's Beverly Hills office while being closely monitored by Weinstein Company staff members to prevent leaks.
