Based on the novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ," written by Lew Wallace and published in 1880.
Gal Gadot was previously in negotiations to play Esther, but had to pass on the project because of production conflicts with "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," in which she played Wonder Woman.
Olivia Cooke was previously in talks for the role of Tirzah, ultimately played by Sofia Black-D'Elia.
Pedro Pascal was previously in discussions for the role of Pontius Pilate.
Source material was previously adapted as "Ben-Hur" (USA/1959) directed by William Wyler and starring Charlton Heston and "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" (USA/1925) directed by Fred Niblo and starring Ramon Novarro.
During production of the film in Rome, actors Nazanin Boniadi, who plays the role of Esther, and Rodrigo Santoro, who plays Jesus, attended the Papal Audience at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City and met Pope Francis. During the visit, Pope Francis formally blessed Santoro.
