Fitzmaurice was diagnosed with a motor neuron disease in 2008, shortly after a short film that he made screened at the Sundance Film Festival. He cannot use his limbs and can only control his eye movements, so he finished the screenplay for "My Name Is Emily" by typing with his eyes using an iris-recognition screen.
The film is an Ireland/United Kingdom/Sweden co-production. Producers also raised over ¿100,000 through a crowd-funding campaign, with the help of endorsements from Alan Rickman, Colin Farrell and Sam Neill, Jim Sheridan and Lenny Abrahamson, among others.
