Wide Release in United States December 18, 2015
Released in United States on Video April 5, 2016
Sequel to "Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope" (USA/1977) directed by George Lucas and starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher.
Alan Horn revealed on April 2nd 2014 that filming had already begun. This was confirmed without a confirmed cast list. Although unconfirmed it was believed to be B-Roll and Second Unit filming.
Harrison Ford broke his leg in the hydraulic door of the Millennium Falcon during filming on set at Pinewood Studios on June 12th, 2014. He underwent surgery, and shooting continued without him until early August, 2014, at which point production went on a two-week hiatus and resumed in late August with the recovered Harrison Ford. His injury was first reported as a broken ankle.
The story takes place 30 years after the events in "Return of the Jedi."
Returning to film in Morocco suggested that Tatooine may play a role in the film. Tatooine has been in every Star Wars movie except Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back where it was only mentioned.
The film's title, "The Force Awakens," was revealed by Lucasfilm and Disney, via Twitter posts, several days following the wrap of principal photography, on Thursday, November 6, 2014. Previously, the title had been rumored to be "The Ancient Fear."
Matthew Vaughn was once rumored to direct.
On November 24, 2014, representatives of Walt Disney Studios confirmed a hint posted on the Bad Robot Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook pages that the teaser trailer for 2015's Star Wars sequel would play in approximately 30 theaters over the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Supreme Leader Snoke, portrayed by actor Andy Serkis, is heard narrating, but not seen in, the first "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" teaser trailer, released in November 2014. ("There has been an awakening ...")
At least some portions of the film were confirmed to have been shot in IMAX format when the official Twitter feed of production company Bad Robot revealed photographs of an IMAX camera shooting on location, on July 8, 2014.
Abrams previously shot "Star Trek Into Darkness" (USA/2013) partially in 70mm IMAX format, with approximately 50 minutes of that film shifting aspect ratios to accommodate the larger IMAX footage, with 3D conversion occurring in post production. Likewise, most of "Star Wars: Episode VII" may have a classic 2:35 to 1 aspect ratio, with select scenes expanding to fill the full, square IMAX screen.
