Synopsis

The African American experience of the 2Oth Century is mapped onto Shakespeare's history plays. Hal is the heir apparent to his father's Kingdom. He shows no capacity to lead a kingdom nor the sufficient personal integrity to follow any law. He prefers to squander his energies on petty exploits and useful idiots. Hot on the heels of a costly civil war, King Henry makes clear his disapproval of Hal. Adding to the pains of this family struggle is the fact of a brewing new war which will be led by a courageous contemporary of Hal known as "Hotspur." As Hal comes of age, events compel him to increased power and responsibility. Among these is a new civil war waged by Hotspur's allies: Archbishop Scroop, Northumberland, Glendower, and the rest. Now the face of a new nation, Hal becomes the very image of national pride as he emerges as Henry V.
