Synopsis

Dave McCloud, a professional gunfighter, has a gun duel with a killer and then sees Judge Irving Short (on his way to investigate a murder in the town of Stopover Flats) ambushed and killed. After burying Short, McCloud rides into town and breaks up a fight between rancher Larry Young and another man. McCloud is mistaken for the judge by the townspeople and soon learns that Red Zimmer and his henchmen are terrorizing the town. Larry and his wife, Bonnie--the only two who know McCloud's true identity--persuade him to continue to pose as Judge Short and to hold court to try Zimmer's man, Comer, for murder. In the midst of the trial, Fletcher, a gunslinger who witnessed McCloud's gunfight, calls him an imposter and challenges him to a duel. McCloud accepts the challenge, shoots the gun out of his opponent's hand, throws away his own gun, and rides out of town, abandoning his career as a gunfighter. Zimmer and his men are arrested, and the townspeople persuade McCloud to return.
