Synopsis

Bill Small is in love with Betty Martin, who is also loved by Jim Beldon, the manager of the local bank. Bill spends a lot of time playing the stock market on paper. He starts to explain his foolproof system to Ed Mason, Betty's brother-in-law, but is interrupted before he can tell him his secret. Because he knows that Betty wants Bill to get a steady job, Jim gives a prospective employer a bad report of Bill and he loses the job. Hurt by what she sees as Bill's lack of responsibility, Betty becomes engaged to Jim. Bill leaves town for a job as a musician with a swing band. After several months, the band returns, and Bill takes the opportunity to persuade Jim that bachelorhood is preferable to marriage. Bill then proposes to Betty, who accepts. The next morning, Bill learns that Jim and Ed have stolen money from the bank where they work and have lost it on the stock market by following Bill's scheme. Bill explains that they did not understand the correct way to use it and convinces them to take even more money. He parlays this money high enough to buy the bank, but in the end, all three men are arrested.
