Synopsis
Adam Gaines, a young university professor in the Los Angeles area, is disenchanted with his life. At his parents' home in fashionable Beverly Hills, he learns that a great-aunt, whom he had always wanted to meet, has died in Cameron, Missouri; aware that no one in his family seems to be affected by the news, Adam decides to drive to the funeral, hoping to meet some less superficial people. After the service, he attempts to talk with his relatives but becomes embroiled in an argument about his convictions and values. Adam then meets 18-year-old Jerri Jo Hopper and asks her out to a drive-in movie. Attracted to Jerri Jo and life in the Ozarks, Adam gets a job working on a power company road crew, where he becomes friends with Harvey Gavin. After Adam injures his hand at work, he goes to visit Jerri Jo, whose parents are away, and they make love. Soon she begins to contemplate marriage, and Mr. Hopper offers to build them a house. Disturbed at the prospect of settling down, Adam spends a night on the town with Harvey, who gets drunk, loses all of their money in a crap game, and after accusing the other players of cheating, starts a fist fight. The following weekend, Adam quits his job and proposes to Jerri Jo. At a party given by her parents, Adam finds that he cannot relate to her family and friends any better than he could to the people in California, and he leaves the party and drives away.
