Synopsis

Pitcalin, an old frontiersman, recalls his days as a youth just after the Mexican-American War, when he and four prospectors (Billy, Benji, Two Card, and Deacon) came across a band of Apaches who knew the location of a gold mine. When the Indians refused to reveal its whereabouts, the prospectors slaughtered all but a young squaw, Jemme, who then agreed to lead them across the desert to the treasure. A bond developed between Pitcalin and Jemme, causing the prospectors to suspect a conspiracy against them, particularly after their horses disappeared. Only after Billy was hit by an arrow did they realize that an Apache was pursuing them. Later the stalking Indian drowned Benji, killed Two Card by placing a sack containing a snake over his head, and so terrorized Deacon that he lapsed into raving madness. Finally, when the Apache confronted Pitcalin, Jemme revealed that he was her vengeful brother, Vittorio. Before Vittorio could force the frontiersman into a battle for his life, however, Jemme killed her brother so that Pitcalin could live.
