Synopsis
The true story of the arrest of a French diplomat for leaking information to a Chinese opera singer he had an affair with for years, who was also a spy. The twist in the story is that the singer was actually a man who deceived the diplomat into thinking he was a woman.

"M. Butterfly" opened on March 20, 1988 at the Eugene O'Neill Theater in New York City where it ran for 777 performances, winning the 1988 Tony Award for Best Play. In addition, John Lithgow received a Tony nomination for Best Actor and B.D. Wong won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor. It closed March 27, 1990.
