Synopsis

When the rowdy members of the Devil's Advocates motorcycle gang stop at a gas station to refuel, one of their members, Tarot, named for his belief in the powers of the tarot, reads the cards of Helen, the girl friend of gang leader Adam. When Tarot foretells that Helen will die in a tower, struck by lightning, Adam challenges his belief in the occult. To prove that the supernatural exists, Tarot leads the gang to a monastery distinguished by a tower like the one on the tarot card. There they meet a cult of brown-robed, Devil-worshipping monks, led by the high priest One, so named because only he speaks for the silent monks. When the monks offer them wine and bread, the gang members, unaware that the wine is drugged, guzzle it down and immediately fall into a drugged stupor. That night in the monastery sanctuary, One sacrifices a cat to Satan, using the animal's blood to draw a circumference around the altar. As One then chants an incantation, Helen awakens and in a trance, is drawn to the altar, where, as she dances naked with a snake, One consecrates her as the bride of Satan. Hearing Helen's screams, Adam awakens and rouses the others to rescue her. In the sanctuary, the bikers overpower the monks, pull Helen from the altar and speed off on their bikes. That night, as they camp in the desert, Helen sees the symbol of the Devil in the campfire and runs off screaming. While the others make fun of Devil worship by chanting and dancing around the campfire, Adam chases Helen and when he begins to make love to her, she sinks her teeth into his neck. Inspired by the chanting, biker Mouse and his girl friend Shirley playfully chase each other into the dry bed of a stream, where they are slaughtered by shadowy figures. The next morning, when the rest of the gang finds their bodies, they assume that Mouse and Shirley fell into the wash while high on drugs, and were subsequently mauled by a wild animal. However, Tarot insists that their deaths were no accident. Continuing their journey through the desert, the gang comes upon an auto junkyard where they stop for the night. Envisioning flashbacks from the Devil worship ceremony at the monastery, Tarot portends that the remaining Devil's Advocates will come to a dire end. That night, the gang sets fire to the hulks of the decaying cars to keep away wild animals. While Adam and the others sleep, Movie, one of the gang, is dancing around the fire when he is suddenly slain and flung into the flames by shadowy figures. The next morning, when the gang discovers Movie's charred eyeglasses in the fire embers, Tarot declares that evil is stalking them. Determined to exorcise the palpable fear dogging them, Adam declares they will return to the monastery and kill the monks. On the way back, however, they get lost in some sand dunes and Adam, angry at Tarot for frightening the others, challenges him to a fight and knocks him out. With evening approaching, the gang gathers wood to start a fire. That night, as Adam stares into the flames and discerns a wax symbol associated with the Devil, he begins to writhe and scream, and the others watch in horror as he changes into a werewolf. When Helen also changes into a werewolf, Tarot pulls a burning log from the flames and sets her on fire. As she burns to death, Adam jumps onto his bike, but the others chase him and set him on fire, too, sending flaming his bike plunging off the road. Tarot then leads the gang back to the monastery to kill the monks, but one, by one, they are felled by a glance from One, converting them all into disciples of Satan.
